There have been significant changes to the A levels in Psychology and Sociology and it is extremely important that you refer to the correct specifications, specimen papers and past papers when looking for information about your A levels in these subjects. Make sure to refer to the 2015 WJEC specifications.

A Level Results 2015

Congratulations to all year 13 pupils for your outstanding achievements in your A Levels in 2015. Across the social sciences there were 9 A* grades; 8 A grades; 15 B grades - an extraordinary achievement.

Social Sciences Summer 2014

As you know, changes to A Levels mean that there will be no resit or A2 examinations in January 2015. This means that some structural changes will be made and your course trajectory will run differently from that in previous years. Changes implemented are designed to ensure that those made at Government level have a positive impact on your final A2 grade.

On your return to GCE teaching on Monday 9th June 2014 please ensure that you come to all lessons fully prepared for the commencement of A2 teaching in all social science subjects. Given the volume of work, I suggest you have a separate file for each module.

Preparatory general reading in your chosen subjects this week will help to broaden your perspective and is strongly recommended. If you are not already a member, please use this time to join Ceredigion Library and the National Library, where there are excellent and up-to-date resources.

Social Sciences Summer 2014 - Programme of Study

All students will be required to meet all internal course requirements for progression onto the A2 courses. Those students intending to add-on an additional AS/A2 social science subject to their A2 studies need to join with the relevant AS class on 9th June.

1) Psychologists will complete one section of PY4 and some components of PY3 in preparation for examination in June 2015);

2) Sociologists will begin studying SY3, the Sociology of Health and one component of SY4 in preparation for the SY3 and SY4 examinations in June 2014

3) Students following the GCE Health and Social Care Single Award will begin work on Unit 7 research and analysis of local health care provision and Unit 10 and this will involve carrying out primary research (examined April 2015).

4) Students following the GCE Health and Social Care Double Award will begin study of Unit 8 psychological theories of personality and Unit 9 professional job roles, in addition to Single Award studies (examined April/May 2015).

5)Year 10 pupils following the GCSE Health and Social Care Course will began studying Human Growth and Development in preparation for their final GCSE examination in May 2015.

ALT 2014.

A2 courses will begin for all year 12 students during the week beginning 10th June. All students will be required to meet all internal course requirements for progression onto the A2 courses. Those students intending to add-on an additional AS/A2 social science subject to their A2 studies need to join with the relevant AS class on 10th June.
1) Psychologists will complete one section of PY4 before beginning PY3 in September (the latter will be examined in January 2013; the former in June 2014);
2) Sociologists will begin studying the Sociology of Health (examined January 2014);
3) Health and Social Care GCE Single students will begin research and analysis of local health care provision and theories of ageing (examined April/May 2014).
4) Health and Social Care Double Award students will begin study of psychological theories of personality and professional job roles, in addition to Single Award studies (examined April/May 2014)
5)Year 10 GCSE students have began studying Human Growth and Development in preparation for their final GCSE examination in May 2014..
6) Year 9 Health students will begin their study of Infectious Diseases, which will begin with a study of the signs, symptoms diagnosis and the treatment of measles, including discussion of the work of Andrew Wakefield and its impact on up-take of the MMR vaccination.

All GCE A2 H&SC students should ensure that in their coursework includes the following:
Use the Welsh Government website and make specific reference to 'Together for Wales' (5 year vision for NHS Wales), relating this to your individual, Rural Health Care Plan, along with the report on Rural Health Innovation Project, the stroke delivery plan (if particularly relevant, explain why), Sustainable Social Services and Ceredigion 2020.

Discuss legislation now in place to support carers, but also evaluate and assess. Is it enough to support those supporting your older individual? Think critically about the process.

Explore changes in England (drawing comparisons with Wales). In particular make reference to the H&SC Act 2012, the Francis Report, compassionate care, the improvement in England planned for those with dementia and the latest news (May 2013) on new measures to protect those who rely on health care services when those care providers go bust (i.e. go into administration).
