SOCIAL SCIENCES 2017-18

There have been significant changes to the A levels in Psychology and Sociology and it is extremely important that you refer to the correct specifications, specimen papers and past papers when looking for information about your A levels in these subjects. Make sure to refer to the 2015 WJEC specifications.
No changes have been made to the WJEC Health and Social Care A level, so in this case the following specifications still apply -
As you know, changes to A Levels mean that
there will be no resit or A2 examinations in January 2015. This means that
some structural changes will be made and your course trajectory will run differently
from that in previous years. Changes implemented are designed to ensure that those made at Government level have
a positive impact on your final A2 grade.

Use HWB for a range of excellent resources across all social science subjects. Google it!

All GCE A2 H&SC students should ensure that in their coursework includes the following:
Use the Welsh Government website and make specific reference to 'Together for Wales' (5 year vision for NHS Wales), relating this to your individual, Rural Health Care Plan, along with the report on Rural Health Innovation Project, the stroke delivery plan (if particularly relevant, explain why), Sustainable Social Services and Ceredigion 2020.

Discuss legislation now in place to support carers, but also evaluate and assess. Is it enough to support those supporting your older individual? Think critically about the process.

Explore changes in England (drawing comparisons with Wales). In particular make reference to the H&SC Act 2012, the Francis Report, compassionate care, the improvement in England planned for those with dementia and the latest news (May 2013) on new measures to protect those who rely on health care services when those care providers go bust (i.e. go into administration).

Revision timetables for all subjects can be found in each subject section.

Finally, as the exams approach, if there is anything we can help with, e-mail or come into school and talk it through.

Look at what some university lecturers and other public figures have to say about 'What is Social Science?' in a two part series produced by the Economic and Social Research Council.

For Part One - -http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=kUApnFN2vGk#at=14

and Part Two -http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=1DTRjAqC61sA Trotterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04812963705968895862noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7321675262635139727.post-59849271304327667552012-06-28T12:35:00.001-07:002012-06-28T14:59:45.240-07:0028th June 2012 Sociologists SY4 :
The Archbishoip of Canturbury, Dr Rowan Williams, has described Cameron's Big Society as "aspirational waffle" and as being "designed to conceal a deeply damaging withdrawal of the state from its responsibilities to the most vulnerable". This has to be a key quote in the 2013 SY4 examination, which you can debate. Is the Archbishop right?
http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2012/jun/23/rowan-williams-big-society-cameron?newsfeed=true

Given the importance of current political debate concerning the role the welfare state and that of philanthropy in meeting needs, it is worth looking at the research being undertaken by Professor Pharoah of the Centre for Charitable Giving and Philanthropy. Pharoah has explored issues such as whether we have become more generous as a nation as we have become wealthier, and whether 'giving' is affected by adverse economic circumstances (a recession). If donations were to dip in a recession, a reduced benefits system would leave those with less very exposed, so this is extremely important research. Does the fact that we now have a 'Centre' studying this, supported by research in five different universities in the UK simply underscore the new importance of philanthropy in society? On the seventieth anniversary of the Beveridge Report, into what kind of society are we metamorphosising?
See LNA Health and Social Care Unit 7- drug shortages in England and Wales due to 'rationing' by drug companies.
See Sociology SY4 LNA for plans by Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, to bring in 'social tariffs' to help those on lower incomes to pay their water bills, by charging those on higher incomes more for their water. .
Also, SY4 LNA interesting research from Brigham Young University, a Morman University in America which you could use in relation to Bourdieu's concept of cultural capital and to challenge conflict theories. Researchers found that although boys with wealthier fathers usually grew up to earn above-average incomes, intelligence, advice, work ethic and other 'human qualities' that sons learn from their fathers appear to be more important than money in determining the future income of their sons. 'Human capital' qualities inherited by sons accounted for about two thirds of the link between their earnings.
Meanwhile a fascinating development in Bangor, if you get a question on age inequality. Use the latest developments in Bangor to support your point that age inequalities are apparent across the lifespan. North Wales police and Gwynedd county Council have imposed a dispersal order banning anyone under 16 entering Bangor city centre between 9pm and 6am without their parents! Nick Pickles, director of Big Brother Watch, stated, "The idea that you could be fined or imprisoned for walking through the town centre simply because you are 15 is madness." In a toughening of responses to gender pay discrimination, Lynne Feathersone, the equalities <strike>mini</strike>ster, has announced that any company which loses a sex discrimination case will be forced to carry out a full equal pay audit (in other words they will have to formally check the pay of all employees) to ensure that there are no further instances of inequality. This might cost some companies a great deal of money (average cost is estimated at £12,8000). In the item on social class (which is a must for your exam scripts), Sir Michael Wilshaw, the Head of Ofsted, has stated that 'poor children were growing up with little hope of a good education or career after being raised by families that failed to understand the difference between right and wrong.' This is a remarkable statement given recent scandals concerning government ministers' expenses (leading to some being imprisoned) and you should link this with Lerner's Just World Hypothesis. The association between poverty and immorality is a persistent smear and an excellent example of reductionism at its worst. For a full account of both items see SY4 Latest News Archive (LNA) for A2 Sociology.A Trotterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04812963705968895862noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7321675262635139727.post-61758818000738815822012-06-13T14:38:00.000-07:002012-06-15T12:30:09.575-07:00
